In Feburary of '26, Discord announced a "Teen by Default" rollout that forces all users to have the same experience under the false rhetoric to "protect the children." The company says the verification runs locally on the device and that facial scans never leave the user's phone, but critics point out that the policy could force Canadians to provide government-issued ID. Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), collecting such sensitive data without a clear, limited purpose may violate privacy-law requirements. This is especially true when you consider that Discord has been caught being dishonest about privacy in the past, and the potential use of Persona which will violate PIPEDA.

American social media companies have no regulations behind their in-house algorithims, and as they collect more and more sensitive data on Canadians and even Americans, Social media algorithims anger and enrage users and regularly attempt to sway opinions on core morales like religion, politics, and law. Furthermore, the right to privacy is recognized internationally as a fundamental human right. Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "no one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence", underscoring that individuals should control how their personal information is gathered, used, and shared.

In the United States, thousands of data-brokers buy, aggregate, and sell billions of personal data points on people across the world with little oversight, creating detailed profiles that can be leveraged for targeted advertising, background checks, or even harassment. Because these brokers often operate without explicit consent, the data they sell can be turned against people in credit, housing, or employment decisions.

While all of this is wild, I wanted to build a secure, safe community where people can be themselves. I want adults to be able to come together online, share a drink, play some games, and make new friends. Finding a new platform to achieve this has been a challenge.

I'm currently trusting Fluxer. Fluxer is built by one person based in Sweden. They plan to implement E2EE for DM to make them go back to being called PM and are working toward self hosting solutions. In an attempt to, Y'know... Actually protect children, the plans are underway to implement Shield by Project Arachnid alongside Cloudflare's solution, CST along with being a registered ESP. Fluxer is pretty familiar to existing Discord users, and provides notable feature parity. Their version of 'Nitro' is also reasonably priced.
